Agricultural Improvement and the Clearances dramatically re-shaped communities and landscapes in Gaelic-speaking Scotland in the 18th and 19th century. However, recent archaeological research has shown that the experience of these events on the ground was often very different to the neat narratives to be found in history books. In this talk the very different experiences of living through this period in two Hebridean communities, St Kilda and Loch Aoineart, South Uist, will be compared and contrasted. It will also explore the reality of clan warfare, looking at common weapons, equipment and tactics used by Scottish clans, their use on battlefields such as Blar na Leine and Culloden, and some of the eyewitness accounts of those involved.
